They depend on us. We depend on you.
We are lucky here in Charlottesville. We live in a vibrant community with two world-class hospitals and a talented community of medical professionals. But even amid this abundance, there is a big gap in our health care system for those who lack personal or employer-sponsored health insurance or access to Medicare or Medicaid.
We probably all know someone like this. It’s the builders, bakers, teachers, waitresses, and mechanics who aren’t offered insurance by their employers. It's landscapers, taxi drivers, barbers, and house cleaners who can’t afford to buy their own policies. Its parents and homeowners and sometimes even health care workers who don’t qualify for federal health care programs.
Without nonprofit health care providers like the Charlottesville Free Clinic, thousands of our hard-working neighbors who fall in this category would be forced to visit crowded emergency rooms for routine care—or receive no care at all for serious and chronic illnesses that could prevent them from working or supporting their children.
Is this what we want for our community?
At the CFC, we believe everyone should have access to high-quality health care. But we depend on you to make this vision a reality.
The majority of the funding for our $1.3million annual budget comes from donations—from our patients, individuals, foundations, businesses, civic groups and churches. We rely on funds generated by fundraising events like our annual benefit concert at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion. The City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County and the Commonwealth of Virginia also provide annual funding, however, the CFC does not receive any federal funds. In addition to cash donations, the CFC's community partners and many local businesses provide pro bono services for CFC patients and for the clinic.
Thanks to this support, in 2011 we scheduled 8,760 patient visits, scheduled 747 referral appointments, and dispensed 31,096 prescriptions to 3,276 the low-income uninsured patients who come to us. How vital is this service for them? 25% of our patients tell us they wouldn’t have sought treatment if we didn’t exist and additional 32% would have sought care in emergency rooms. On behalf of our patients, we thank you for your generous support.
