Caring for Neighbors

Many chronic diseases can be prevented or relieved through simple lifestyle changes. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that eliminating three risk factors – poor diet, inactivity, and smoking – would prevent 80% of heart disease and stroke and 80% of type 2 diabetes.

The 2018 Free Clinic Annual Report highlights several stories of Free Clinic patients who, with your generosity, are working with the Free Clinic to embrace healthier lifestyles to improve their health. Patients like Sally and Harold who have reversed the effects of chronic disease by adding fresh fruits and vegetables to their diets.

By participating in Fresh Farmacy, Sally and Harold, have been able to improve their health and manage chronic diseases. Sally, who works to manage her diabetes, has lost 69 pounds, cut her insulin in half, and her A1C level has dropped to 6.1%, a healthy blood glucose level. Harold has lost 24 pounds and his blood pressure is at a healthy level.
