Fresh Farmacy – Food as Medicine

Fresh Farmacy, a partnership with the Local Food Hub, was featured on NBC29.  The program helps our neighbors in need adopt healthy food choices and control diet-related diseases. A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce risk of heart disease and stroke, and help control blood sugar which can help keep appetite in check.

  • Patients receive a bag of local, organic fresh fruits and vegetables every other week from April through November.
  • Bags contain fresh eggs, fruits, and vegetables, along with information about the vegetables and simple recipes for how to prepare the food. Food is provided by local farms through the Local Food Hub.

Last spring, 65% of Free Clinic participants saw an improvement in weight, HgA1c blood glucose levels, and/or blood pressure levels.

The program started at the Free Clinic, but has expanded to other community sites including Westhaven, Starr Hill Health Center, BeWell, and Region Ten’s Boost program.
