Fresh Farmacy Promotes Healthy Eating and Nutrition

In honor of National Nutrition Month in March, we are spotlighting Fresh Farmacy, an innovative partnership with the Local Food Hub, that helps our neighbors in need adopt healthy food choices and control diet-related diseases by providing nutrient rich foods.

Virginia, a CFC patient and Fresh Farmacy participant, has seen positive effects on her health from participating in the program.  “This is the best I have felt in decades. Before I had headaches, difficulty sleeping, and stomach aches. Now I feel completely good. I think the most important factor in being healthy is good nutrition.”

A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce risk of heart disease and stroke, and help control blood sugar which can help keep appetite in check.

Twice per month during the program season, selected patients pick up a free bag full of fresh eggs, fruits and vegetables provided by the Local Food Hub. Each person has their weight and blood pressure recorded at each visit as a way to measure the program’s impact on participating patients. Participants are also encouraged to keep track of their health and fitness goals between pick up days.
